Ready to Go!

I spent a lot of time today packing all my stuff into my saddle bags and the dry sack of the yak trailer I'll be hauling. It was really exciting to see months of preparation fit nicely into a few canvas, military surplus bags. Like everyone on the trip, I'm brining everything I'll need to live on the road for over a month, stopping for groceries, laundry, and the sights. In less than a week, Dad is driving me to Los Angeles, where I'll meet up with Samir at his uncle's before boarding a train to Seattle.

The train is the Coast Starlight. Total trip time: 35 hours. I'm looking forward to the journey, as I've never travelled more than a few miles by train. It will take us about 35 days to make the return journey to San Diego.

I still need to get a couple items before heading out:
  1. A spare 16 x 1.75 inner tube for the trailer
  2. 2 spare spokes for my tire
  3. rubbing alcohol (fuel for soda can stove)
I should be able to get it all at REI. I need to watch a video about replacing individual spokes again. It's been a while... All in all, I'm confident that our group has enough knowhow to make the best of any pitfalls along the way.

I rode 20 miles with all the gear the other day. I set out in the morning, but the Vegas sun had already set the valley on fire. It was 110 degrees as I rode up and down hills. I drank over 100 oz. of water in an hour!

In other news, Samir has mono. I hope he recovers quickly. He's rarely sick, so he must be pretty tired. Feel better Bromir!
