Leaving at dawn

The Prius is loaded up in the garage, just waiting for the morning. Tomorrow Dad drives me to Samir's uncle's place in L.A.

I am nervous and excited for the trip. Thoughts of things I might have forgotten to pack or may regret packing make it hard to sleep. Mostly, I'm just excited for the adventure. I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time. I will miss being home: having an endless supply of cereal and family bonding. I have a feeling that after a month on the road, however, I'll always look forward to times when I can once again leave all my "stuff" behind and be so free to wander.

Calvin and I talked today about making a bike charger for my phone in order to supply power to track my entire route minute by minute. While thee are several DIY solutions out there, none of them was something I could construct in a few hours time with a single visit to Radio Shack. I'm definitely adding such a device to a new list: electronics hacks to do list. Thanks Chap.

Before putting the bike in the car, I removed the pedals and wheels, and turned the handlebars. I placed the two spare spokes I got in the seat tube after pitting a few cotton balls in the bike's interior (to stop the spokes from rattling or falling to the bottom bracket). The bike should be all set to fit into a bike box for the train. I partially disassembled the trailer and packed it with most of my gear into it's box. I am taking my saddle bags and messenger bag with me as carryons. I have a whole bag of cereal, three water bottles, three books, and some cards. Samir and I will have to figure out the seating, but it should all work out.

I am excited about how dynamic this trip will be. Yes, we have a route and a schedule, but who knows what, or whom, we will find along the way.
