Day 2--the first real day

My phone died early on day 2 while trying to post a blog. I lost the blog (and a few since then) beacause I forgot to save a draft.

We rolled out of Fay bainbridge state park after a drawn out reorganization and packing of gear. At the camp, we met two older bike tourists from Seattle. They gave us some tips, including telling Camilo that his advil will turn to dust in a few hundred miles. Mostly, the kindly couple told horror stories. It was unnerving when they offered to take our picture, you know, just in case we went missing in the next week. See! Creepy! Other than their fascination with mishaps, they were really nice.

We rode across the bridge away from Bainbridge Island and to the town of Port Gamble. I was shocked to see a Civil War reenactment taking place in the town. The event was huge! Surely there wasn't a battle fought in Washington. I asked one of the actors and he chortled, remarking that they managed to defeat the rain at least. It rained all day long.

This was the bridge we crossed over Hood Canal. The bridge offered breathtaking scenery. The clouds seemed to be sleeping peacefully on the water.

We ascended up a three mile hill after the bridge and celebrated our climb with a water break.

While Samir and I were riding, a deer jumped away from the road just feet from us. It was amazing.

After a long day of hills and rain, we discovered a jewel of a campsite. A nice old man named Allen allowed us to camp on his land, a broad, verdant valley surrounded by ponderosas and dotted with small cabins. We set up camp under a grove of magnificent cedars and made ourselves at home.

Camilo took the first shower. So cold!

For dinner we cooked up a large pot of quinoa and tuna. It was so delicious, if for no other reason that it restored warmth to our hands. There were a lot of slugs there, each the size of my thumb!

And I was finally able to call Dad to wish him a happy fathers day. Love you guys!
