California basecamp

Yesterday Dad drove me to Los Angeles. We listened to On Beauty the entire way, and were thoroughly entertained. We saw a cool truck for Calvin too.

We arrived at Samir's uncle's place after just four and a half hours. The Singh family has been extremely welcoming and helpful, making marvelous food and lighthearted conversation. The two kids are really cute as well, taken to reading Magic School Bus and a small picture book about St. Francis (a quaint choice coming from a seven year-old son of a Sikh and a Hindu). Samir's aunt is very impressive, tackling a PhD in public health with two kids and still opening her home to a complete stranger.

The photo above is Samir's grandfather, sharing his thoughts on US geography with the next generation. In the foreground, you can see Samir's gear strewn about while he packs. That gear now includes an ukulale, and a harmonica on my end. I will need a fair bit of practice before I play anything more than a jumble of notes.

We also bought bike boxes for $10 from REI instead of for $15 from the station. Everything is boxed up and ready to board the Amtrak train, the Coast Starlight.

At six o'clock in the morning, LA near Belair is veiled in a light fog, and the songs of birds and grasshoppers travel farther, making waking a musical experience.

Thank you, Singh family, and thank you, Dad. It's another two hours until the train station, and then 35 hours of "all aboard!"
